The concept of Inflow Control Device (ICD) was developed in the early 1990’s. The necessity for ICD completion came from the uneven reservoir drainage along long horizontal wells and thick vertical wells. The uneven drainage is caused by reservoir heterogeneity, fluid saturation variation and frictional pressure drop along the wells.
The devices can be liner or tubing deployed and installed as part of the initial completion or recompletion (Retrofit). The ICDs delay water and gas coning and help to improve sweep efficiency in waterflood, polymer flood, gas flood, steam flood and other thermal and non-thermal EOR methods. In unconsolidated reservoirs, the devices are equipped with sand control technology to provide sand production control as well as flow control.
